Did you know that

The Vatican Gardens occupy 23 hectares of the forty-four hectares of the Vatican City. Since 1279 the gardens have been the resting and mediation places of the Roman Pontiff, Pope Nicholas III had a solemn structure built on the Vatican hill, protected by the new walls that we can still admire today. Renaissance culture, art and philosophy influence the gardens not only through the architecture itself, but also with the construction of fountains, statues and temples. From 13 April 2015 the Vatican Gardens are again open to the public. Don’t let go of the opportunity to visit the green heart of the Vatican in a new, unprecedented and sustainable way. The visitor can also opt to visit the gardens on foot with an authorized guide available on our site.

Free Entrance

Free 0-5 years

Vatican Museums reserve free admission to all disabled visitors with certified disability over 74%. In case of non self-sufficiency, the gratuity is also extended to an accompanying person. This type of visit cannot be booked online: entrance tickets, free of charge, are issued, upon presentation of an invalidity certification, at the Special Permits and / or Reception desks in the Museum hall.

A disabled skip the line (without waiting line) is guaranteed to the disabled person and his accompanying person.

At the cloakroom, a free wheelchair rental service is made available (subject to availability) by MV for visitors with walking problems. For rental, a presentation with a valid identity document is required.

Visit without architectural barriers

The museums are also accessible to visitors on mobility scooters and electric wheelchairs. However, for reasons of encumbrance, in some museum areas access or use is not allowed. In this case, the visitor will be invited to transfer on traditional wheelchairs that can be rented for free at the entrance hall.

Dedicated and equipped toilets for the disabled are located along the tour route and at the refreshment points. For a faster identification of the toilets, we recommend consulting the VM Map.

Most of the museum areas of the VM are accessible to people with motor disabilities. To facilitate the visit, the VM however recommend a barrier-free visit itinerary which, thanks to the assistance of the Guardian staff, allows easy access to the main services and points of interest.

Security

During the entrance all visitors must pass the security check through the metal detectors.

All objects not allowed in the museum must be left in the cloakroom of the Vatican museums (it is a free service offered by the Vatican Museums).

Dress Code

The entrance to the Vatican Museums, the Sistine Chapel, St. Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican Gardens is allowed only to visitors dressed in a dignified way. They are not the outstretched and / or low-cut clothing, shorts, miniskirts and hats. However, during the summer season, entry is allowed with shorts that cover the knee and use of the shirts that rest the shoulders!

Photographing at the VM

With the exception of the Sistine Chapel, it is allowed to photograph – for personal purposes only – the works and environments of the MV. The use of the flash is always prohibited. The use of the photographic tripod and / or professional equipment is prohibited; any use must be authorized by the Directorate of Museums and Cultural Heritage. The use of the extendable selfie stick is prohibited.
