The entrance to the Vatican Museums, the Sistine Chapel, St. Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican Gardens is allowed only to visitors dressed in a dignified way. Unarmed and / or low-cut clothing is not allowed; important is to keep your shoulders and knees covered.
In order to guarantee the safety of visitors and the protection of the artistic heritage, the Museums require the delivery to the wardrobe of knives, scissors and / or metal tools of various kinds. The cloakroom service is free. To facilitate and speed up the metal detector control operations, it is advisable to pre-emptively remove any items that are not allowed (see items Umbrellas; Knives; Weapons) from museums in your hand luggage, and report them to the staff in advance. Before entering the exhibition spaces, visitors are required to deposit their luggage, suitcases, backpacks, packages and containers in the cloakroom which, due to their size and characteristics, are not considered suitable by the staff. Visitors who continue the tour in the Vatican Basilica are advised not to leave their luggage to the MV. The delivery of medium and large umbrellas (or those with a tip), sticks (except for walking aids), photographic stands, video cameras, signs and signs of any kind is required in the wardrobe. The auctions of recognition of authorized tourist guides are allowed. The introduction of alcoholic and spirits into the Museums is not permitted (daily delivery / collection to the cloakroom is mandatory). The consumption of food and drinks inside the exhibition halls is prohibited. However, visitors can freely deliver any type of food and / or drink in their possession to the cloakroom (collection is mandatory within the closing time of the day of visit, under penalty of the destruction of what is not claimed).
Wear comfortable clothes and shoes. If it’s summer, bring a hat with you to protect yourself from the sun and a bottle of water.
It is forbidden to introduce bottles, glass containers, alcoholic drinks and aerosol cans, camping backpacks, bulky bags and suitcases / trolleys, while medium and small shoulder backpacks may be introduced, which must be subjected, like any other bag, in control with the metal detector.
